2019... The Year I stopped My "New Year, New Diet" Mentality

Ok, let me paint you a picture:

It’s FINALLY January 1st. You’ve finished another year of your life (undoubtedly full of many highs and lows) and as you reflect on last years resolutions, you stop and think to yourself… did I achieve all the things I wanted to? And before you know it, you’re starting to make your brand new list full of resolutions for this coming year. How exciting!

Just as you put your pen to paper, the very first thing you write down is “I want to lose 5kg” or “I want to get fit” or “I want to feel good about my body this year.”

Let me stop you RIGHT THERE.

Have you noticed that this “resolution” pops up on your list at the start of almost EVERY year? And have you noticed that this “resolution” is almost NEVER fulfilled or only for a certain amount of time...

You’re not alone GF! In today’s society it has become second nature for us to put the way we look FIRST on our priority list. But did you know that 95% of women who go on diets to lose weight, actually end up gaining it all back within a year? So why are we all thinking that it’s US who are failing a diet? NEWSFLASH… the diets are failing us!

The reason I am bringing this up is because I realised that this is the FIRST YEAR since I can remember that I haven't made any new years goals or resolutions to do with the way that I look!

That’s right! I feel no need to diet, over-exercise or RESTRICT.

I was honestly shocked when I realised this… GF’s it feels so good to not be ruled by my appearance or a diet at the start of every year!

How I finally got here though is a story in itself, and I am going to share it with you today in the hopes that you too can finally put an end to making the same new years goal every year and ditch the diet for good!

So...

A couple of years ago I decided that I was going to find a way to create a sustainable lifestyle for myself that didn’t involve the word DIET at all. I was sick of the diet cycle. I was sick of restrictions. I was sick of feeling like I was not good enough. I was sick of feeling bad about my body every January after Christmas time!!

How did I do it? Well, I worked really hard on creating this sustainable solution by adopting an intuitive lifestyle. In a nutshell, intuitive eating and an intuitive lifestyle is surrounded by the concept that you listen to your body rather than what a person, book or plan tells you what to do! Because these outside sources don’t know you and they definitely don’t cater to your body’s specific functions and needs. And who knows you better than YOU, am I right?

So I decided to give the middle finger to diets and restrictions, and instead I started listening to my body… and then acting accordingly!

FIRSTLY

I changed my perspective. If you are like me and you have been on the dieting hamster wheel for most of your adult life, then it can be extremely hard to switch your mindset around the way you view your body, food and exercise. It wasn’t easy but I slowly trained myself to change the way I viewed health, I started actively listening to my body’s signals and cues that it was telling me (that’s how I’ve overcome some big food intolerances!) and finally, I stopped restricting myself.

SECONDLY

I worked on my mental health and practised LOTS of self love! The biggest reason we jump to diets as a solution in the first place is because we are not happy with ourselves as we already are. But how can we expect to make any real changes if we don’t respect our body’s natural state? I started practising daily affirmations and implementing that into my daily morning routine. I also worked hard to stop comparing myself to the “perfect” people I kept seeing on social media and in real life too.

LASTLY

It took lots of work (and still does) but I ditched diets by listening to my body and acting accordingly. I listen to my body’s bio-feedback, my energy, my moods, my mental state and slowly but surely I have learnt so much about my body and myself! I created lifelong habits that I can sustain for the rest of my life, instead of relying on quick fixes to do the job for me!

Stopping and starting diets every January isn’t cool GF’s! It’s not cool for us, our bodies and our mental states!
